Tell us about your organisation (history, aims, vision):

West End Friends has been running since 1986 and in 2018 were taken under the umbrella of Search. West End Friends started when two social workers noticed the need for elderly, isolated, and house bound people to have contact with befrienders. They were originally chaired by Rose Gilroy whose commitment to the organisation kept it going until West End Friends joined up with Search. Search's mission is to promote and protect the health, wealth and wellbeing of older people.

Who do you serve? How do they access services?

We work with South Asian and Chinese elderly/housebound people in the community. Often the people who use this service are first generation immigrants who are isolated and alone. Most referrals come through the community via word of mouth. Referrals from third party agencies are from health and social care professionals.

What are you current projects or services?

Our current projects include one-to-one support through our free service or paid for packages for those requiring a higher level of support.

We have activities including:

  • a social group at RSM every Tuesday between 12-3, where there is gentle exercise and Tai Chi.
  • Zoom Bingo for the Chinese community every other Wednesday at 3PM
  • Free Advice and Information service for residents 50+ in the West End of Newcastle at our drop-ins or book an appointment to see an adviser face-to-face

We recruit volunteers and match them with people who speak the same language for befriending and one to one support .

Search has also hired an Asian male engagement worker, Nadeem, who will be planning/organising events in the very near future.

Please contact Search for more details.

Have you adapted your service during the pandemic?

Yes.  Telephone befriending and doorstep visits, help shopping, collecting and delivering prescriptions.

What are your three main concerns at the moment?

  1. The need for advocacy support due to language barriers.
  2. Health problems and support needs around attending hospital appointments and accessing the GP
  3. Practical support with shopping
