Tell us about your organisation (history, aims, vision):

Healing Beyond Borders is a registered community interest company based in Newcastle upon Tyne, dedicated to supporting the ethnic minority community.

Our organisation was founded from the lived experiences of two siblings. Our personal journey has highlighted the challenges faced by individuals and families within ethnic minority communities when trying to access support. Out of this experience grew a shared commitment to create a service that understands these barriers and works to provide compassionate, inclusive, and accessible support for others. By being open about our experiences, we hope to break down barriers, reduce the stigma surrounding substance use, and show that recovery and support are possible. This lived understanding shapes everything we do and allows us to relate to the people we serve in a meaningful way.

We are a very new organisation and hope to alleviate the challenges faced by the ethnic minority community, particularly the south Asian community. We aim to support the community by connecting individuals with existing services, ensuring access to appropriate resources, and offering guidance in navigating complex systems. In addition, we aim to provide recovery-focused support and collaborate with organisations to deliver tailored mental health support.

Our vision is to establish a welcoming community hub where ethnic minority communities feel safe, heard, and included. We aspire to create a space that fosters belonging, trust, and empowerment, where individuals know their voices matter. By becoming a central point of support and connection, we aim to be the organisation that the community turns to in times of need, building a strong and visible presence across Newcastle.

Who do you serve? How do they access services?

We serve the ethnic minority community, with a focus on providing accessible and culturally sensitive support. While our service has not officially launched, we plan to begin offering drop-in sessions towards the end of 2025, likely held in a local church space. In the meantime, we continue to provide advice and support through outreach, and can be contacted via our website, email, or phone

What are your current projects or services?

Although we have not officially launched, we are already offering advice, guidance, and outreach support to members of the ethnic minority community. Individuals can currently connect with us through our website, email, or phone.

As we grow, our planned support will include:

  • A 12-step recovery programme tailored to the needs of the community
  • Recovery-based groups to foster peer support and shared experiences
  • Practical support in accessing existing services and navigating complex systems
  • Mental health support delivered through collaborative partnerships with other organisations

Some of these services will be available through regular drop-in sessions, expected to begin towards the end of 2025, in a safe and inclusive community space.

What are your main concerns at the moment?

  • Limited resources and funding. As a new organisation, we face challenges in securing the funding and resources needed to establish and sustain our services. Without stable financial support, our capacity to meet community needs is restricted.
  • Navigating a complex system. Setting up a new service within an already complex support system brings challenges. We are working to ensure our organisation is positioned effectively, complements existing services, and is accessible to those who need it most.
  • Building presence and trust within the community Finding a safe and suitable space to deliver our services is key. At the same time, we must raise awareness of who we are, embed ourselves within the community, and ensure we are reaching the right people with the right support.
