PROPS
Tell us about your organisation/department/project (your aims, what you do, who you work with): We are a charity committed to making a difference to families and friends impacted by someone else’s substance misuse. We offer support through our CRAFT Intervention (Community Reinforcement and Family Training) CRAFT is an evidence-based intervention created by Dr Robert Meyers, who is also a Patron of PROPS, who using behavioural psychology as it’s foundation, developed an eight-week programme to help carers understand addictions and develop skills to positively support and encourage their family member or friend to alter their behaviour and seek help.
The skills help the carer to manage conversations in a positive way to remove blame, shame, or humiliation and to reduce conflict. We also look at improving the relationships within the family and helping the carer to ‘step-back into their own lives’. We can offer CRAFT on a 1-1 basis or in a group, we also offer emotional support and Family Mediation, we have on-site Counsellors and offer respite to our carers.
Tell us why being a Haref Ally is important for you and your organisation.
We admire the work that you carry out in the community and feel that we could work Collaboratively to improve the lives of the families in the community. We are a non-judgemental and confidential service with a team who are passionate about supporting individuals, families and communities to reduce stigma, discrimination and judgement specifically around the impact of substance misuse.
Tell us about anything that you or your organisation has done to improve how you work with ethnically marginalised communities.
Our whole team have attended the Cultural Competency Training to gain a better understanding of different cultures and customs to be able to support each individual/family in align with their religion or cultural beliefs in a respectful and non-judgemental manner. We have a volunteer from the Bangladeshi community who has volunteered tirelessly to support our charity in many different forms such as being a translator, promoting our services within her local community and beyond. Whilst also running a weekly support group for some of the most marginalised people within the community.
