Northumberland Cricket Board
Tell us about your organisation/department/project (your aims, what you do, who you work with):
Our remit is as the local governing body for cricket across Northumberland, Newcastle and North Tyneside. This encompasses everything, including performance cricket, schools coaching, junior club cricket, disability cricket, Street cricket, and trying to grow the game in non-traditional ways. We work with our network of 70+ cricket clubs, over 100 schools per year, and deliver a range of community-based cricket programmes in areas of deprivation.
Tell us why being a Haref Ally is important for you and your organisation
One of our main priorities is increasing access to the game for those who may face socio-economic barriers to playing cricket - this includes people living in areas of deprivation, diverse communities, and inner city residents. Our Street programmes in particular provide free, accessible cricket in inner city areas and other areas of deprivation to allow young people a chance to access the game. We are currently looking to appoint a Cities Officer.
Tell us about anything that you or your organisation has done to improve how you work with ethnically marginalised communities
Northumberland Cricket Board is committed to broadening the reach of the game and making it accessible to all within our area. In recent years we have established a strong and thriving Street Cricket programme which delivered free cricket sessions to young people in six inner city areas of deprivation around Newcastle and North Tyneside. A significant percentage of the attendees at these programmes are from ethnically diverse communities. As touched upon above, we are looking to expand this work further with the appointment of a full-time Cricket Cities Officer to support this work, as well as engaging with adult groups.
