Tell us about your organisation/department/project (your aims, what you do, who you work with)

We are the GP Federation for the city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, supporting the city’s GP practices by enabling them to work collectively and at scale. They ensure that primary care has a strong voice within the wider health system, and that initiatives which benefit many practices are done once, rather than duplicated across individual sites. We manage the largest social prescribing team in the North East, coordinate a range of health services including community health outreach, and targeted diagnostic monitoring (e.g., blood pressure and ECG services) so that populations who might otherwise face barriers to access receive proactive care. Our community health bus, Monty, travels around the city conducting 'Health Check-Ins' where anyone 18 or older in the community can have a walk-in 30-minute health check up to review their blood pressure, cholesterol profile, BMI and diabetic screening without an appointment.

Tell us why being a Haref Ally is important for you and your organisation

Being a Haref Ally is important for NGPS because it supports our mission to reduce health inequalities and improve access to care across all of Newcastle’s communities. It enables us to learn from lived experiences, design services that are more culturally aware and responsive, and strengthen engagement with groups who often face barriers in healthcare. Working through Haref helps us collaborate with partners, share good practice, and ensure that the work we deliver at scale benefits all communities fairly.

Tell us about anything that you or your organisation has done to improve how you work with ethnically marginalised communities

We improve engagement with ethnically marginalised communities through targeted, accessible initiatives. Our community health bus visits diverse venues, including places of worship, to bring healthcare directly to communities across Newcastle. Additionally, our research team is dedicated to studying health conditions affecting Black communities, helping to shape services and interventions based on evidence and lived experience. These efforts ensure more equitable access to care and stronger connections with all communities in the city.
