Becoming an Advocate
I recently took on the new role of Manager of Connected Voice Advocacy Service and we are now recruiting new advocates. Read on for more information on a fantastic opportunity to join an award winning service.
I may be new to this role but I am not new to advocacy and I feel passionately about this work and want to share why. My values drive me to fight inequality and as a communication graduate I am fascinated by how we communicate with ourselves and others, advocacy combines the two.
I have taken on many roles in my 25 year career which would be classed as ‘change work’. I have coached people to overcome barriers, facilitated policy consultations, run networks for underrepresented communities, funded local initiatives and developed support services for discriminated groups. Advocacy feels different as I am able to access legal frameworks to officially challenge poor practice and unfair situations to bring about significant change. As an advocate I am able to work non-judgmentally with some of the most vulnerable people and ensure they are listened to, are seen and given choice and control over their lives.
Each day I champion the rights for someone in need and I get to tackle discrimination on many levels. I feel humbled to be able to facilitate life changing improvements, to ensure person centred care planning, to challenge restrictions placed on someone’s habits, living arrangements or personal relationships, to check people are safeguarded when necessary but also empowered to take risks. No two days are ever the same.
If this sounds like something you would like to do, get in touch. Applications accepted until 31st July.
