Tell us about your organisation:

​HostNation Tyneside exists to give marginalised and socially isolated asylum-seekers and refugees in Newcastle a way into our society through the friendship of locals. Our priorities are integration, inclusion and participation. We bring people from diverse backgrounds together in friendship. Through careful match-making with local residents, we aim to give refugees a positive experience of Newcastle, a pathway into the culture of the North East and an informal opportunity to practise English. We have been running this project in Tyneside since 2022 and have made over 200 matches to date.

Who do you serve and how do they access services?: 

We serve refugees and asylum seekers living in Newcastle, Gateshead and North and South Tyneside. We accept referrals through our online referral form, which can be completed by caseworkers, college teachers, NHS and charity staff, etc. People with refugee status can also self-refer via the “for refugees” section of our website.​

What are your current projects or services?

A one-to-one befriending service for people seeking sanctuary. 

What are your main concerns at the moment?

Priority number one in the short term is recruiting volunteer befrienders! Also, building and maintaining partnerships with referrers, and securing funding to continue long term.
