Latest VCSE Newcastle and Gateshead Sector Snapshots for 2025
Connected Voice conducts an annual snapshot of the voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) sector across Newcastle and Gateshead, offering valuable insights into its scale, diversity, and ongoing evolution. These findings play a crucial role in shaping policy and guiding funding decisions, helping to ensure the sector’s essential contribution to local communities is both acknowledged and supported.
In Newcastle, the most significant change between 2024 and 2025 was the increase in VCSE sector staff, with a rise of 6% taking the total numbers of staff to 4,346. A similar upward trend was seen in the number of volunteers, with a small gain of 3% on 2024, taking this to 17,272. Despite challenging conditions, the estimated total income of all registered charities in Newcastle also saw a notable increase to £695,959,511, 8% up on 2024.
In Gateshead, both registered charities and Community Interest Companies (CICs) saw little to no growth in numbers of organisations, however income rose by 2% to £521,341,950, and the number of VCSE sector staff saw a rise of 5% taking the total numbers of staff in Gateshead to 2,750 .
