Advocacy in Child Protection Cases

We hosted a networking event in November that brought together solicitors and local authorities to explore the vital role of advocacy for parents in child protection proceedings.

The event highlighted how advocacy offers a holistic approach—providing support, guidance, and understanding when the process can feel overwhelming and complex. For many parents, child protection proceedings can be one of the most stressful experiences. Having an advocate by their side ensures they are heard, informed, and supported every step of the way.

Advocacy goes beyond just attending meetings—it’s about giving parents the confidence and support they need to take an active role in decisions that shape their family’s future. Our advocates provide clarity on complex processes, explain rights in plain language, and offer reassurance during what can often feel like an overwhelming and difficult experience. Ensuring time is taken to pause the process so that the parent understands what is happening and is at their pace. Advocates will go through scenarios to help prepare for a court hearing so that the parent is at their best on the day.

By bridging the gap between professionals and families, advocacy promotes transparency, builds trust, and helps create constructive dialogue. This collaboration leads to improved outcomes for children and builds stronger, more supportive relationships among everyone involved.

The day was filled with meaningful conversations, practical discussions, and insightful presentations aimed at improving collaboration in child protection cases.

Since 2019, we’ve been committed to child protection advocacy supporting 139 cases over the past six years. Our first advocacy request came from Gateshead Council, and since then we’ve partnered with local authorities in Newcastle, Middlesbrough, North Tyneside, and Northampton.
In 2021, solicitors joined our efforts, and today we work closely with firms across the North East, North West and Yorkshire.

  • “A Day in the Life” Presentation
Our team showed what advocacy looks like in real life, giving professionals a clear picture of the challenges parents face and how advocates make a difference. We explained how advocates help parents prepare for meetings and hearings, attend and support them to speak up when needed, clarify what happened afterwards, and make sure they understand what’s expected. The session was well received and sparked great conversations about why early intervention and consistent support matter.
  • Expert Perspective from Ben Hoare Bell Law Firm
Representatives from Ben Hoare Bell shared their experiences of working alongside advocates and the positive impact this has on parents. They emphasised that having an advocate present can transform meetings, making them more constructive and less adversarial.

Our advocacy service provides:

  • Independent support for parents during child protection conferences, meetings, and court hearings.
  • Clear explanations of processes and decisions.
  • Emotional reassurance to reduce stress and anxiety.
  • Empowerment so parents feel confident to express their views and make informed choices.

This event was just the beginning. We are committed to continuing these conversations and strengthening partnerships with solicitors, local authorities, and other professionals. We can help make child protection processes more transparent, supportive, and effective for families.

If you work with families who could benefit from advocacy support, we’re here to help.
