Tell us about your organisation (history, aims, vision):

Ilaf is a new community-led initiative in Newcastle, inspired by the Arabic concept of unity and collaboration. Our vision is: “To be ‘Ilaf’ — an interactive space that embraces those engaged with Arab culture, enhances communication and collaboration, and supports them through a comprehensive series of cultural, economic, and social events, aiming to strengthen empowerment, foster pride in identity, and contribute to enriching cultural diversity in society.” We aim to create a platform that connects individuals, groups, and institutions, while promoting mutual support, cultural pride, and community wellbeing.

Who do you serve? How do they access services?

We serve Arabic-speaking communities and people of Arab heritage in Newcastle and surrounding areas, while remaining open to the wider public. Our activities will be accessible through public events, partnerships with local organisations, and open invitations via our online platforms.

What are your current projects or services?

  • Our first planned project is Ilaf Bazaar, a community market designed to bring together diverse Arab communities, showcase local talents and businesses, and build awareness of Ilaf’s mission.
  • We are also exploring cultural activities such as poetry competitions, football tournaments, and book clubs. Details coming soon!

What are your main concerns at the moment?

  • Ensuring we can effectively reach all members of the Arabic-speaking community and encourage their active participation in Ilaf’s activities.
  • Securing suitable spaces (halls or community centres) that can host our events and provide a consistent base for our activities as a new and growing group.
  • Establishing strong connections and collaborations with local organisations to increase our visibility and impact.
