Skills for People
Tell us about your organisation? Since 1983 Skills for People has been supporting disabled people and their families to have better lives. We provide information, guidance and practical support. We support people with a learning disability and autistic people to be healthy and well, independent and included in their communities. We work to improve the world for disabled people and their families by using our lived experience and expertise to change hearts and minds, attitudes and services.
Tell us why being a Haref Ally is important for you and your organisation?
We are committed to making sure our services reach all communities within Newcastle and that their needs and wishes are at the heart of what we do. We welcome the opportunity to work with partners to improve our contribution and support equal opportunities for all.
Tell us about anything that you or your organisation has done to improve how you work with ethnically minoritised communities?
Our Families Advice and Support Team regularly supports families who have disabled children to ensure they get the support, advice and any grants they are entitled to. Our coffee mornings and peer support opportunities for parents and family carers are held at different community locations across the city. Both of these reach a wide range of ethincally minoritised communities, including refugee and asylum-seeking families.
In 2022 we took part in a national project called Equal Treatment hosted by Learning Disability England in partnership with the Race Equality Foundation to increase understanding and the ability to tackle racism among our staff and the groups of people with a learning disability that we support. An action plan has been created to shape our work going forward.
