Ramadan Calendars 2024
Ramadan is one of the holiest months of the Islamic calendar, and so it is very important for all of our Muslim communities. This year, Ramadan falls between Monday 11 March and Tuesday 9 April.
During Ramadan, Muslims fast during the daylight hours. Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, and Muslims fast to increase taqwa (closeness to God). Ramadan is also a time for families and communities to come together, strengthen connections, and donate to chosen charities. Learn more about Ramadan from the Muslim Council of Britain
Fasting cleanses us both spiritually and physically. Haref's calendars serve as a reminder for our prayers and our physical wellbeing during this holy month.
Muslims who observe the month-long fast will not eat food, drink liquids or smoke from dawn to sunset. Anyone with serious health issues or who is frail, pregnant or on daily medication/receiving medical treatment is not expected to fast.
The idea for the yearly Ramadan calendars came from our local Imams over 15 years ago, and each year we work with them to develop and distribute the calendars to our local Muslim communities. Along with the prayer times, the calendars include safe fasting information, and tips on managing diabetes and glaucoma. This important health advice is created in partnership with NHS Diabetes Centre, Glaucoma UK and Diabetes UK.
This year, Haref has worked with 11 mosques and Muslim centres across Newcastle upon Tyne, North Tyneside and Gateshead to create unique calendars for each mosque. Prayer times are calculated using specific mathematics around the position of the sun, local time, longitude and latitude. For this reason, the prayer times vary between mosques, therefore they all need a dedicated calendar.
Our 2024 Ramadan calendars are available online and in print format. We are delivering the printed calendars to the mosques and Muslim centres involved and will also be sending them out to local community-facing buildings.
We appreciate your support in helping to share this information with our communities.
