Latest VCSE Newcastle and Gateshead Sector Snapshots for 2024

Connected Voice conducts an annual snapshot of the voluntary, community, and social enterprise (VCSE) sector across Newcastle and Gateshead, offering valuable insights into its scale, diversity, and ongoing evolution. These findings play a crucial role in shaping policy and guiding funding decisions, helping to ensure the sector’s essential contribution to local communities is both acknowledged and supported.

In Newcastle, the most significant change between 2023 and 2024 is the sharp decline in registered Community Interest Companies (CICs), dropping from 423 to 277. While the number of registered charities saw a slight decrease, from 1,109 to 1,105, total charitable income rose, increasing from £584 million to £639 million.

In Gateshead, the standout development over the same period is the growth in registered charities, rising from 893 to 913. This increase has contributed to a higher overall charitable income from £446m to £509m. Conversely, the number of CICs experienced a reduction, falling from 132 in 2023 to just 87 in 2024.
