International Women's Day 2025: For ALL Women and Girls

International Women's Day 2025 will take place on Saturday 8 March. The theme chosen by the United Nations this year is For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.

Open Clasp Theatre Company - "Rupture" + Panel Discussion 

Wednesday 5 March - Saturday 8 March (panel discussion on Friday 7 March following the show), Live Theatre, Broad Chare, Quayside, Newcastle, NE1 3DQ

This play, based on true stories, explores the experience of mothers in prison. The play is Written by Catrina McHugh MBE, directed by Rachel Glover and co-created with the women from HMP Low Newton. The show costs £15 per ticket, or £12 for concessions.

‘A Story of Hope’ Women’s Art Display by Her Circle and Harriet Mee

The exhibition is open from Thursday 6 March until Monday 31 March, Newcastle Cathedral St Nicholas Square, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 1PF

Written, visual and digital artwork provide a powerful reflection on these women’s recovery from child removal. Themes of trauma, resilience and hope are explored. This will include art produced by the women of Her Circle and Harriet Mee.

Northumbria University - Gendered Violence and Abuse Conference 2025

This interdisciplinary conference will focus on how to overcome the challenges and complexities of changing public and professional perceptions of gendered violence and abuse. 

The topic is complex and multifaceted, influenced by cultural, social, and economic factors. Despite a growing awareness and concern about gendered violence and abuse, changing public and professional perceptions that lead to better outcomes for victim-survivors remains slow.

Catch 22 - online webinar: The Importance of Unplugging Digital Skills Amongst Women and Girls

Thursday 6 March, 12.00 p.m. - 1.15 p.m., Online. 
 

This event will bring together leading employability delivery organisations and industry experts to discuss the digital skills gap, gender disparity in tech careers, and ways to empower women and girls into digital and technology roles.

The event will highlight the success of the TechUp Women programme, delivered in partnership with the Institute of Coding and Durham University, and provide an opportunity to network with like-minded professionals.

Women Writing Up North

On International Women's Day, City Library hosts a panel with six local writers sharing their journey to publication and beyond. We'll discuss local opportunities to help women get into writing, short readings and host a Q&A. This event is free to attend.

Alphabetti Theatre - 365 Days of the Girls, Theys & Slays

From Abba to Billie Eilish, The Beatles to Ariana Grande, the Girls, Theys and Slays have something for everybody. Spend your Saturday night jamming to their music and finish off the night with a party in the bar! 

The Girls, Theys and Slays choir are a community choir set up in March 2024 by Maya Torres and Rosie Bowden. The choir brings together North East women and non-binary folk for casual sing-alongs. They have performed at Alphabetti and at Live Theatre as part of ‘Lasses’ night and they received funding from the Get Ready Grant to write an original song, which they performed at Newcastle Pride in 2024.  They are currently writing their own musical, The Last Wave.
