Tell us about your organisation COBALT is the name of a research study about dementia. We are part of the Newcastle Biomedical Research Centre.  We work with the NHS, universities, patients, and the public to try to improve people's health and wellbeing. Our team of researchers is trying to find out whether a tablet that helps people who have Alzheimer’s disease can also help people living with a different type of dementia.

Tell us why being a Haref Ally is important for you and your organisation

Being a Haref Ally is hugely important to us. We want to understand and remove any difficulties people face in finding out about dementia and memory loss and getting involved in dementia research.  We can only make sure new drugs and procedures work well for everyone or if they affect people in different ways if members of every community take part. Haref is helping members of the study team to meet people from ethnically minoritised communities and share ideas. We are finding out what people think are the most important things to research. We are also learning how our work can fit better with the ways people say they want to take part.

Tell us about anything that you or your organisation has done to improve how you work with ethnically minoritised communities

We know that some people from ethnically minoritised communities do not know as much as they would like to about dementia and memory loss. Alison is a member of our research study who is meeting with some of the community groups particularly for older members. She is offering information and support sessions on dementia and memory loss. These are free and are delivered at local community venues. They are an opportunity for people to share their concerns and receive accurate answers to their questions and suggestions about where to find further help.
