Support for Afghan Refugees

We know that many organisations across Newcastle and Gateshead are responding quickly and working together to support Afghan refugees. When time is of the essence, requests for support are often made through social media and word of mouth, which can sometimes be difficult to search. We thought it would be useful to keep this page updated with information, as and when it becomes available.

If your organisation is supporting Afghan refugees then email connect@connectedvoice.org.uk with any information you would like us to share.

West End Refugee Service (WERS) is collaborating with N.E.S.T to make up 300 care packs for newly arrived male asylum seekers. They are now no longer accepting physical donations of clothing and toiletries but they are accepting cash donations. Cash donations can also be made to the WERS Hardship Fund.

St Vincent's Centre in Newcastle is accepting donations of food and toiletries at their centre on Newbridge Street, NE1 2TQ. They have received a lot of clothing donations so are no longer accepting these. They are also accepting donations online at: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/vinnie-s-cafe4. They are accepting online food deliveries which can be made Monday - Friday, 9am - 4pm (3pm on a Friday) and they are sharing which items are needed most on their Facebook page. They will also gratefully receive supermarket e gift vouchers which can be emailed to stvincentsnewcastle@svp.org.uk

Peace of Mind have had one referral for support for an Afghan family thus far. They are currently accepting donations for the creation of welcome packs in anticipation of the arrival of Afghan refugees, to make their arrival as comfortable as possible. These packs will include:

  • Culturally appropriate food
  • Clothing
  • Toiletries
  • Toys etc.

The PoM befriending support offer is also being coordinated to link new arrivals with people from the already settled refugee community. PoM hope to be able to match people with people from the same country for the purposes of language and shared experience, but may need to offer support from people with other backgrounds, depending on demand. They expect to launch the scheme on 8 September. https://peaceofmindnortheast.org.uk/
